Every Outlaw has a story. Ours begins with a horse.

Long before the Outlaw became a symbol of Sisters School District, it represented something much deeper. According to local tradition, an outlaw horse was one that had been rejected by the herd, left to find its own way. In the early days of Sisters athletics, neighboring schools were reluctant to travel to this small mountain town to compete. Rather than seeing themselves as outsiders, the students and community of Sisters embraced the idea. They adopted the Outlaw horse as a symbol of resilience, determination, and pride, transforming what could have been viewed as a disadvantage into an identity worth celebrating.

Today, the Outlaw horse reminds us that true belonging isn't something you're given, it's something you create together.

At Sisters School District, being an Outlaw has never been about standing apart from others. It's about standing together. It's about welcoming every student, encouraging every dream, and creating a community where everyone has the opportunity to discover their strengths and become the very best version of themselves. Whether in the classroom, on the stage, on the athletic field, in the outdoors, or serving the community, Outlaws are known for being all in. They aren't defined by a single talent or interest. They are curious learners, creative thinkers, compassionate neighbors, dedicated teammates, and courageous leaders who are willing to try something new and make a positive difference.

The story of Sisters School District is deeply connected to the story of the community itself. Education has been part of Sisters for well over a century, beginning with a small one-room schoolhouse that served the children of pioneers in the late 1880s. As the town grew from a rural frontier community into one of Central Oregon's most vibrant places to live, its schools grew alongside it, always rooted in the same values of hard work, strong relationships, and neighbors helping neighbors. While our campus and programs have evolved over the years, that small-town spirit remains at the heart of everything we do.

Today, Sisters School District is unlike anywhere else. Our elementary school, middle school, and high school share one connected campus beneath the iconic Three Sisters Mountains, creating opportunities for students of every age to learn, collaborate, and grow together. Our classrooms extend beyond four walls into forests, rivers, businesses, farms, and the community itself. Students are encouraged to explore their passions through academics, athletics, music, visual arts, outdoor education, career pathways, leadership opportunities, internships, and innovative programs that prepare them not only for graduation, but for life.

This commitment to community-connected education reflects our mission: to create belonging, prepare students for the future, and inspire lifelong learning. Here, success is measured by far more than grades or trophies. It's measured by character, curiosity, resilience, kindness, service, and the courage to pursue new opportunities. It means caring about something enough to give it your very best. It means supporting others, celebrating one another's successes, and leaving a positive mark on the world around you.

Perhaps that's why so many graduates eventually find their way back home. Once you've experienced what it means to be an Outlaw, the connection doesn't end at graduation. Alumni return as volunteers, mentors, coaches, business owners, parents, and community leaders, helping the next generation discover the same sense of purpose and belonging they found here. Because being an Outlaw isn't about where you come from. It's about who you choose to become.
