Personal Electronic Devices

Technology has become an important part of our daily lives, but so have the challenges that come with constant connectivity. Research continues to show that reducing distractions during the school day can improve student focus, strengthen classroom engagement, encourage meaningful relationships, and support student well-being. For these reasons, Sisters School District follows Oregon's statewide requirements regarding the use of personal electronic devices during the instructional day.

Our goal is not to eliminate technology, but to create learning environments where students are fully present, actively engaged, and able to connect with their teachers and classmates without the constant interruption of personal devices. We believe students learn best when they are participating in discussions, collaborating with others, solving problems, and building the communication and interpersonal skills that prepare them for success beyond the classroom.

During regular instructional hours, personal electronic devices, including smartphones, smartwatches, and personal earbuds or headphones connected to those devices, must remain off and away unless their use is permitted under an approved exception or as otherwise allowed by district policy. Students who need technology for learning will continue to use district-approved educational devices, including Chromebooks and other classroom technology provided by Sisters School District.

We recognize that every student's needs are unique. Oregon law and district policy allow exceptions for documented medical needs, accommodations identified in a student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan, and other approved circumstances through the district's exception process. Parents and guardians who believe an exception is needed are encouraged to review the exception request process and speak with their school principal.

Families needing to communicate with their student during the school day are encouraged to contact the School Office, and students may also use the office to communicate with parents or guardians when needed.
