Curriculum

At Sisters School District, we believe curriculum should do more than teach facts, it should prepare students for life. Strong reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies remain the foundation of an excellent education, but today's students also need opportunities to think critically, solve real-world problems, collaborate with others, communicate effectively, and adapt to a rapidly changing world. That's why our curriculum continues to evolve alongside educational research, workforce needs, and the future our students will enter.

Selecting curriculum is a thoughtful, collaborative process. Teams of teachers, instructional leaders, and administrators carefully research instructional materials, review student data, pilot promising programs, and evaluate how well they align with Oregon standards and the needs of Sisters students. Before adoption, proposed curriculum is available for public review and ultimately approved by the Sisters School District Board of Directors. Every curriculum area is revisited regularly to ensure it remains current, effective, and aligned from kindergarten through graduation.

Recent work includes reviewing our elementary literacy curriculum, continuing our commitment to the Science of Reading and helping students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Mathematics curriculum is also being reexamined with a focus on building strong conceptual understanding and preparing as many students as possible for Algebra by eighth grade. Specialized curriculum, including the English Language Learner program, is continually refined to ensure every student has access to meaningful learning.

While quality curriculum is essential, learning doesn't stop with a textbook. Sisters School District believes education should connect students with authentic experiences that bring learning to life. Through programs such as IGNITE, IEE (Interdisciplinary Environmental Expedition), career pathways, internships, outdoor learning, and community partnerships, students apply classroom learning in meaningful ways while developing the creativity, resilience, communication, and problem-solving skills needed for success beyond graduation.

Education is changing, and so are we. By combining research-based curriculum with innovative teaching, real-world learning, and exceptional educators, Sisters School District is preparing students not just for the next grade level, but for college, careers, and life.
