Section 504 (Physical or Mental Accomodations)

Every student deserves equitable access to learning. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal civil rights law that helps ensure students with qualifying disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities and school programs. At Sisters School District, we work collaboratively with students, families, and staff to identify barriers to learning and provide reasonable accommodations that help students fully participate in school.

A student may be eligible for a Section 504 Plan if they have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Unlike Special Education, which provides specialized instruction through an Individualized Education Program (IEP), a Section 504 Plan provides accommodations and supports that allow students to access the general education curriculum and participate in school activities alongside their peers.

Accommodations are individualized to meet each student's needs and may include classroom supports, testing accommodations, health-related plans, accessibility modifications, or other adjustments that help students succeed academically and participate fully in the school environment.

Sisters School District believes access extends beyond the classroom. Students with Section 504 Plans are encouraged to fully participate in school activities, athletics, clubs, leadership opportunities, and community experiences. Inclusive programs such as UCS (Special Olympics Unified Sports Oregon) and our partnership with OAS (Oregon Adaptive Sports) help ensure students of all abilities have opportunities to build confidence, develop friendships, strengthen independence, and experience success both in and beyond the classroom.

Families are important partners throughout the Section 504 process. District staff work closely with parents and guardians to review student needs, determine eligibility, develop appropriate accommodations, and monitor student progress over time. Our goal is to ensure every student has the support needed to reach their potential while fostering independence, confidence, and success.
