ELD (English Language Development)

Sisters School District is committed to helping English Language Learners (ELLs) develop the language skills they need to succeed academically while honoring the languages, cultures, and experiences they bring to our schools. We believe multilingualism is a strength that enriches our classrooms, broadens perspectives, and strengthens our entire school community.

Our English Language Development (ELD) program supports students whose primary language is not English by helping them build proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing English while continuing to make meaningful progress in grade-level learning. Instruction is tailored to each student's individual language needs and is designed to help students confidently participate in classroom instruction, communicate effectively, and prepare for success in school and beyond.

Our ELD educators work closely with classroom teachers, specialists, and families to provide individualized support that complements the general education curriculum. Through ongoing assessment, collaboration, and personalized instruction, students continue developing both English language proficiency and academic skills while meeting Oregon's English Language Proficiency Standards.

Strong partnerships with families are an essential part of student success. Sisters School District's Community Liaison plays a vital role in strengthening the connection between home and school by providing translation and interpretation services, helping families navigate school procedures, connecting them with district and community resources, and assisting with access to support services. The district also hosts family engagement events throughout the year that help families build connections with our schools, learn about available resources, and overcome language barriers in a welcoming and supportive environment.

One of the most rewarding milestones in the ELD program is when students successfully transition out of English language support services. Each June, these students are recognized during a special celebration at the District Office alongside the School Board, where they receive a certificate honoring their achievement and dedication. Many students continue their multilingual journey by earning the Oregon State Seal of Biliteracy, a prestigious recognition awarded to graduates who demonstrate proficiency in English and one or more additional languages.
