Medication at School

The district recognizes that some students need medication during the school day in order to remain healthy, manage chronic conditions, and fully participate in school. When medication must be taken during school hours, Sisters School District follows Oregon law and district procedures to ensure medications are stored, handled, and administered safely by trained school personnel.

Before bringing medication to school:

To help ensure your student's safety, please review the following requirements:

• Complete one Authorization for Medication Administration form for each medication, including both prescription and over-the-counter medications.
• All medications must be delivered to the school office by a parent or guardian.
• All medications must be in their current original container.
  • Prescription medications must remain in the original pharmacy-labeled container.
  • Over-the-counter medications must remain in the original manufacturer's packaging.
• The information on the medication container must match the information provided on the authorization form.
• If directions for an over-the-counter medication differ from the manufacturer's instructions, written authorization from the student's healthcare provider is required.
• Certain nonprescription products that are not FDA-approved also require written orders from the student's healthcare provider before they may be administered at school.

Medication administration:

• Medications are stored in a secure, locked location and administered by the school nurse or trained school personnel.
• Parents and guardians are responsible for:
  • Providing all medications.
  • Maintaining an adequate supply throughout the school year.
  • Notifying the school in writing of any medication changes.
  • Picking up any unused medication by the last day of school.
• Medications not picked up will be safely discarded.
• The school nurse will notify families when additional medication is needed.

Self-carry & self-administration:

Some students may qualify to carry and self-administer medication while at school.

• Elementary School: Rescue medications, such as asthma inhalers, EpiPens, and glucagon, are generally stored in the school office. Additional planning may be needed for students who ride the bus.
• Middle School: Students may be approved to self-carry asthma inhalers for quick access or choose to keep them in the school office.
• High School: Students may be approved to self-carry one to two days' worth of medication when it remains in the original labeled container and the required Self-Medication Agreement has been completed and approved.
• Students approved to self-carry medication must demonstrate they can use it safely and responsibly and agree not to share medication with others.
