SPED (Special Education)

Sisters School District believes every student deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed in an environment where their individual strengths and needs are recognized and supported. Special Education provides individualized services for eligible students with disabilities, helping them access meaningful learning experiences and make progress toward their educational goals.

Students who qualify for Special Education receive services through an IEP (Individualized Education Program) developed collaboratively by families, educators, specialists, and, when appropriate, the student. An IEP provides specialized instruction and related services designed to meet a student's unique educational needs. Depending on the student, services may include specially designed instruction, speech-language services, occupational or physical therapy, behavioral supports, assistive technology, and transition planning. Whenever appropriate, students learn alongside their general education peers while receiving the individualized support needed for success in the least restrictive environment.

While Special Education provides specialized instruction through an IEP, a Section 504 Plan is designed for students who do not require specialized instruction, but need accommodations to access the general education curriculum. Both programs are intended to ensure students receive the support they need to be successful, but they serve different educational needs.

At Sisters School District, we believe inclusion extends beyond academics. Students are encouraged to participate in school activities, leadership opportunities, extracurricular programs, and community partnerships that promote belonging, confidence, independence, and meaningful relationships. Programs such as UCS (Special Olympics Unified Sports Oregon) and our partnership with OAS (Oregon Adaptive Sports) provide opportunities for students to build skills, friendships, and lifelong connections through inclusive experiences.

Special education is most successful when schools and families work together. We value open communication, shared decision-making, and strong partnerships that help students thrive academically, socially, emotionally, and beyond graduation.
