McKinney-Vento (Homeless Program)

Every child deserves a stable, supportive educational experience, even during times of housing uncertainty. The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law that helps ensure children and youth experiencing homelessness or housing instability have equal access to a free, appropriate public education and the support they need to remain engaged in school.

A student may qualify for McKinney-Vento services if they lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This can include families living temporarily with relatives or friends due to financial hardship, residing in motels or shelters, living in campgrounds or vehicles, or experiencing other temporary housing situations. Families often do not realize they may be eligible for support, and we encourage anyone with questions to reach out.

Sisters School District works closely with families to reduce barriers that may interfere with a student's education. Depending on individual circumstances, eligible students may receive assistance with school enrollment, transportation, school supplies, meals, fee waivers, referrals to community resources, and other services that help maintain educational stability and success.

Our district also partners closely with FAN (Family Access Network) and other community organizations to connect families with resources that support both immediate needs and long-term stability. Every family's situation is unique, and all requests for assistance are handled with compassion, dignity, respect, and confidentiality.
